Claverack Rural Electric
Cooperative, Inc.
Location: U.S. Route 6, five miles east of Towanda, Pa. Claverack REC is an electric distribution cooperative serving
more than 17,000 members in eight northern Pennsylvania counties (Bradford, Lackawanna,
Luzerne, Lycoming, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, and Wyoming). Incorporated on October 24,
1936, electric service was first provided in November 1937. Claverack is a Dutch word
meaning "clover reach," reflecting the practice of Dutch explorers to name
points along rivers to aid navigation. The cooperatives founders decided that the
pioneering spirit embodied in Bradford County's Claverack Township (dissolved in 1787) fit
perfectly with pioneering efforts to bring electricity to the countryside. BOARD OF DIRECTORS
